Orange County, North Carolina
Proposal - Waste Characterization Study

Orange County WCS KCI Proposal
21
Wake County, North Carolina
Contact: John Roberson, Solid Waste Management Director, (919) 743-4772
Waste Characterization Study
KCI conducted a 6-day WCS for Wake County that determined the composition of
residential, commercial, and convenience center waste delivered to the county-owned transfer station
and landfill for disposal. To ensure accurate representation of the county’s waste, KCI developed a
detailed sampling schedule pulling 42 representative samples of waste from various haulers and
municipalities based on the annual total tons disposed by the haulers/municipalities. The study also
included calculating separate composition results for the Town of Cary’s residential waste and
residential recyclables, as well as waste generated from North Carolina State University (NCSU). KCI was
responsible for all aspects of project planning, sorting activities, and report preparation. The data was
compared to the previous WCS conducted in 2011. The results of the study assisted county, Cary, and
NCSU staff in evaluating their waste diversion programs and determined what types of materials to
target in future diversion efforts.
School Waste Characterization Study
KCI conducted a 5-day WCS on waste generated from public schools in Wake County. For the study,
waste was collected from select elementary, middle, and high schools across the county. A total of 40
samples were pulled from the collected waste and sorted into 40 material categories. KCI calculated
generation rate and composition for elementary, middle, and high school waste and the combined
districtwide waste. The results were compared to previous school WCSs conducted in the county. The
study provided valuable data to the county and school staff to evaluate the recycling program in
schools and assess future needs to increase waste diversion.
City of Greensboro, North Carolina
Contact: Chris Marriott, Deputy Director, Field Operations, (336) 373-7612
Recyclables Characterization Studies
KCI has conducted three two-week recyclables composition studies
for the City of Greensboro over the past three years and will be
conducting two additional studies over the next two years. For each
of these studies, KCI sampled more than 60 loads of residential and
commercial single stream recyclables collected by the city. KCI
managed a crew of temporary laborers to sort the samples into
nearly 40 categories to determine the composition of recyclables
and contamination in the recycling stream. The studies provide the
city with essential data for its recyclables processing contract and
provide insight into education needs to reduce contamination.
With annual studies being conducted, the city will be able to
measure the change in recyclables it collects over this time period.

“(We are) very appreciative
of (KCI’s) hard work and
dedication to helping us be
more data informed about
what's in our recycling so
we can better educate
residents.”

Tori Carle
Waste Reduction Supervisor
Greensboro, NC
Docusign Envelope ID: 1223AA0B-DDEC-4EBE-8FEA-427010558A5C
