11 <br /> 1 Commissioner McKee read the following proclamation: <br /> 2 <br /> 3 ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> 4 PROCLAMATION <br /> 5 FIRE PREVENTION WEEK <br /> 6 OCTOBER 6-12, 2024 <br /> 7 <br /> 8 WHEREAS, Orange County is committed to ensuring the safety and security of all those living in <br /> 9 and visiting our County; and <br /> 10 <br /> 11 WHEREAS, fire is a serious public safety concern both locally and nationally, and homes are the <br /> 12 locations where people are at greatest risk from fire, understanding that: <br /> 13 <br /> 14 • Home fires killed more than 2,700 people in the United States in 2022, according to the <br /> 15 National Fire Protection Association® (NFPA®), and fire departments in the United <br /> 16 States responded to 360,000 home fires. <br /> 17 • Smoke alarms sense smoke well before you can, alerting you to danger in the event of <br /> 18 fire in which you may have as little as two minutes to escape safely. <br /> 19 • Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in reported home fires in half. <br /> 20 • Orange County residents should be sure everyone in the home understands the sounds <br /> 21 of the smoke alarms and knows how to respond. <br /> 22 • Orange County residents who have planned and practiced a home fire escape plan are <br /> 23 more prepared and will therefore be more likely to survive a fire. <br /> 24 • Orange County residents need to make sure their smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) <br /> 25 alarms meet the needs of all their family members, including those with sensory or <br /> 26 physical disabilities. <br /> 27 . Orange County first responders are dedicated to reducing the occurrence of home fires <br /> 28 and home fire injuries through prevention and protection education. <br /> 29 • Orange County residents that are responsive to public education measures are better <br /> 30 able to take personal steps to increase their safety from fire, especially in their homes; <br /> 31 and <br /> 32 <br /> 33 WHEREAS, the 2024 Fire Prevention Week theme, "Smoke alarms: Make them work for you.," <br /> 34 serves to remind us of the importance of having working smoke alarms in the home; <br /> 35 <br /> 36 NOW THEREFORE, we, the Orange County Board of Commissioners, do hereby proclaim <br /> 37 October 6-12, 2024, as Fire Prevention Week throughout this community, and urge all the people <br /> 38 of Orange County to prepare and practice a home fire escape plan for Fire Prevention Week 2024 <br /> 39 and to support the many public safety activities and efforts of Orange County's fire and emergency <br /> 40 services. <br /> 41 <br /> 42 This the 1st day of October, 2024. <br /> 43 <br /> 44 <br /> 45 Jamezetta Bedford, Chair <br /> 46 Orange County Board of Commissioners <br /> 47 <br /> 48 <br />
