3 <br /> 1 Workplaces welcoming of the talents of all people, including people with disabilities, are a critical <br /> 2 part of Orange County efforts to build an inclusive community and strong economy. <br /> 3 <br /> 4 Brenda Bartholomew, Human Resources Director, reviewed the background information <br /> 5 for the item. She also introduced Darice Johnson from the Disability Awareness Council. She also <br /> 6 recognized a guest, Matthew, and noted that Dr. Timothy Miles was in the audience. <br /> 7 <br /> 8 Commissioner Fowler read the following proclamation: <br /> 9 <br /> 10 ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> 11 PROCLAMATION <br /> 12 DISABILITY EMPLOYMENT AWARENESS MONTH <br /> 13 OCTOBER 2024 <br /> 14 <br /> 15 WHEREAS, October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month; and <br /> 16 <br /> 17 WHEREAS, this October marks the 79th anniversary of National Disability Employment <br /> 18 Awareness Month, with a history tracing back to 1945, focusing only on people with physical <br /> 19 disabilities and has evolved today to acknowledge the importance of recognizing the inclusion of <br /> 20 people with all nature of disabilities; and <br /> 21 <br /> 22 WHEREAS, the purpose of National Disability Employment Awareness Month is to educate about <br /> 23 disability employment issues and celebrate the many and varied contributions of America's <br /> 24 workers with disabilities; and <br /> 25 <br /> 26 WHEREAS, during National Disability Employment Awareness Month, Orange County <br /> 27 recognizes the immense contributions of disabled Americans, and recommits to delivering <br /> 28 America's full promise of equal dignity, respect, and opportunity for every American and Orange <br /> 29 County welcomes the talents of all people, including people with disabilities; and <br /> 30 <br /> 31 WHEREAS, Orange County remains committed to continuing our efforts in building an inclusive <br /> 32 community, increasing access to good jobs for all workers, including disabled workers and <br /> 33 reinforcing the value and talent people with disabilities add to our workplaces and communities; <br /> 34 and <br /> 35 <br /> 36 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that Orange County recognizes and commemorates the <br /> 37 79th anniversary of National Disability Employment Awareness Month and declares October 2024 <br /> 38 as Disability Employment Awareness Month in Orange County; and <br /> 39 <br /> 40 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the U.S. Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment <br /> 41 Policy and Orange County call upon employers, schools, and other community organizations in <br /> 42 Orange County to ensure that disabled workers have access to good jobs every month of every <br /> 43 year; and <br /> 44 <br /> 45 BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Orange County Board of Commissioners pledges to <br /> 46 continue to take steps throughout the year to recruit, hire, retain, and advance individuals with <br /> 47 disabilities and work to pursue the goals of opportunity,full participation, economic self-sufficiency, <br /> 48 and independent living for people with disabilities. <br /> 49 This, the 1 st day of October, 2024. <br /> 50 <br /> 51 <br />
