Assembly of Governments April 29, 2004 Parks Update <br /> Southern Community Park <br /> This park, located off US 151501 adjacent to Dogwood Acres and south of Southern <br /> Village in Chapel Hill is in the design stage with Special Use Permit drawings under way. <br /> The approved master plan includes connection to the existing park and ride lot, a roller <br /> hockey court, two basketball courts, two parking areas, future recycling site, future <br /> community center, two picnic shelters, a playground with observation deck, a children's <br /> splash play area, iestrooms with a maintenance building, three soccer fields, a youth <br /> baseball field, meadow, dog park, greenway trail and three resource conservation <br /> districts. Funding allocated for this park totals $2,842,441. <br /> The master plan has undergone some minor revisions to accommodate improvements in <br /> design of specific components and in the overall design. They include clustering of the <br /> dog park,baseball field and meadow to the area immediately south of Dogwood Acres <br /> Drive and the reorientation of the soccer fields to a north/south configuration. <br /> This park is subject to the Town of Chapel Hill's "Percent for Art"project. The Orange <br /> County Board of Commissioners has agreed to commit 1% of the county funding for this <br /> project to an art component in the park, A Request for Qualifications for Public Artists <br /> has recently been distributed and an artist or team of artists may be selected by June. <br /> Submittal of a Special Use Permit is expected in late spring or early summer, The <br /> Council has granted Expedited Processing for the project application. At the conclusion <br /> of the Special Use Permit process, the design firm will prepare construction drawings and <br /> specifications needed for a Zoning Compliance Permit and bidding. Construction of the <br /> park is expected to begin by the fall of 2005 and the current time line indicates the park <br /> will be ready to open by the spring of 2007, <br /> Homestead Park Aquatic Center <br /> This facility will be sited adjacent to the skate park in Homestead Park off Homestead <br /> Road, A 25 meter by 25 yard pool will be included as well as a 25 meter by 15 yard <br /> warm water, zero entry pool. All of the essential operating components of a public pool <br /> facility are included in the design of the building. The budget for this project is <br /> $5,513,106, A public hearing was held on January 14, at which many suggestions were <br /> offered from two major groups within the swimming community. The comments <br /> received at the meeting were all of a positive nature, and no one indicated dissatisfaction <br /> with the project <br /> This project is also a candidate for"Percent for Art" funding apportionment and the <br /> committee has worked to distribute a call for artists and hopes to award the contract for <br /> this project by August, <br />
