• Develop infrastructure strategies for the Economic Development Districts, particularly <br />the Buckhorn Road area, including funding sources <br />Process Big Strateay and Internal and External Marketing-related <br />• Elected officials must decide if they embrace economic development and make its goals <br />reachable <br />• Once economic strategy for County is established-make it real and tangible for all <br />stakeholder/citizens-- not just a listing of elements. A mission statement for all to <br />understand and internalize. <br />• Find ways to provide incentives to the types and kinds of employers we want to locate <br />here-i.e. figure out what we want and go get it. <br />• Carolina North's plans could impact strategies; we need to know more about Carolina <br />North's potential tax benefits and local,jobs <br />• Awazeness campaign: Develop/enhance a publication or media distribution channel that <br />informs citizens, business, government on the future/development/progress of our county <br />(use print, web, TV, etc.). <br />• Recognize there is life West of Orange County and sell Orange County as gateway to <br />RTP from Greensboro/Winston-Salem and Charlotte. <br />• Involve and educate our community's youth in economic development so that Orange <br />County kids remain here and build our community. <br />• Plan for the greater use of human resources, volunteers and older adults in all phases of <br />economic development <br />• Plan for the greater diversity of different income groups, racial groups, and persons with <br />disabilities. <br />• Increase commercial base, set benchmarks and time limit <br />Hig1T-Priority Strategies <br />After adding to and modifying the initial list, the groups then were asked to develop tlrree or <br />four priority strategies out of all the lists of strategies before them. The composite of priority <br />strategies from all four groups can be summarized as follows, The list below is in descending <br />order (most frequently mentioned thoughts are listed first): <br />o Develop an environmentally-friendly transportation policy that supports growth in <br />designated areas and provides multi-modal alternatives to cars (26+ votes, 4 groups) <br />o Establish more business-friendly policies and procedures (21+ votes, 4 groups) <br />o Establish partnerships for economic development that include LJNC-Chape] Hill (16+ <br />votes, 3 groups) <br />o Workforce and economic development joint planning, Durham Tech (13+ votes, 3 <br />groups) <br />o Reduce barriers to affordable housing development (.3 groups) <br />o Other issues of quality of place, fundamentals, including diversity, tolerance (2 groups) <br />o More arts and entertainment in the towns (1 group) <br />o Water supply sources and agreements (1 group) <br />o Better collaboration within the region (1 group, but few votes) <br />
