6 <br /> 1 WHEREAS, the National Weather Service has confirmed three separate tornadoes have <br /> 2 impacted Orange County since 2019; and <br /> 3 <br /> 4 WHEREAS, the National Weather Service issued nineteen Severe Thunderstorm Warnings, five <br /> 5 Flash Flood or Flood Warnings, and one Tornado Warning for Orange County in 2023; and <br /> 6 <br /> 7 WHEREAS, year to date, Orange County has already experienced significant severe weather <br /> 8 activity to include twenty-three Severe Thunderstorm Warnings and ten Flash Flood or Flood <br /> 9 Warnings; and <br /> 10 <br /> 11 WHEREAS, community members can take a few simple steps — creating an emergency supply <br /> 12 kit, making a family disaster plan, and staying informed —to help make preparedness a personal <br /> 13 priority and improved health a goal in our community; and <br /> 14 <br /> 15 WHEREAS, this year's Preparedness Month focus is on empowering Asian American, Native <br /> 16 Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander communities to act today to prepare for future disasters, as we <br /> 17 know that these communities face unique barriers when it comes to accessing disaster <br /> 18 preparedness information and resources that take their languages, experiences, and cultures into <br /> 19 consideration; <br /> 20 <br /> 21 NOW, THEREFORE, we, the Orange County Board of Commissioners, recognize Orange County <br /> 22 Emergency Services - Emergency Management Division along with emergency managers <br /> 23 throughout the nation, who have collaborated to recognize September as National Preparedness <br /> 24 Month, and the Board joins with them in encouraging Orange County residents to stay informed <br /> 25 and prepared; <br /> 26 <br /> 27 FURTHERMORE, the Orange County Board of County Commissioners hereby declares <br /> 28 September 2024 as "Orange County Preparedness Month." <br /> 29 <br /> 30 This the 17th Day of September 2024. <br /> 31 <br /> 32 Jamezetta Bedford, Chair <br /> 33 Orange County Board of Commissioners <br /> 34 <br /> 35 A motion was made by Commissioner Portie-Ascott, seconded by Commissioner Fowler, <br /> 36 to approve and authorize the Chair to sign the proclamation. <br /> 37 <br /> 38 VOTE: UNANIMOUS <br /> 39 <br /> 40 <br /> 41 c. Adult Education and Family Literacy Week Proclamation <br /> 42 The Board approved a proclamation designating the week of September 16-20, 2024 as Adult <br /> 43 Education and Family Literacy Week in Orange County and commending Orange Literacy for its <br /> 44 40 years of dedicated service to the community. <br /> 45 <br /> 46 BACKGROUND: The week of September 16-20, 2024 is considered Adult Education and Family <br /> 47 Literacy Week by several organizations on a national level. In addition, Orange Literacy is <br /> 48 celebrating its 40th anniversary this year promoting literacy, and has positively impacted the lives <br /> 49 of thousands of adults and families in the Orange County community. <br /> 50 <br />
