ASO Task Force Input re: <br />Valtanteerism & Public Involvement <br />INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />John Link, County Manager <br />Gwen Harvey, Assistant County <br />Manager, ext 2300 <br />TELEPHONE NUMBERS: <br />Hillsborough <br />Chapel Hill <br />Durham <br />Mebane <br />732-8181 <br />968-4501 <br />688-7331 <br />336-227-2031 <br />PURPOSE: To receive follow up information as requested by the BOCC at its April 1 work <br />session and to authorize actions needed to implement the transition of the Orange County <br />Animal Shelter by July 1, 2004. <br />BACKGROUND: The Board of County Commissioners authorized the Humane Society of the <br />United States (HSUS) to conduct an assessment of animal control and animal sheltering <br />services paid for by Orange County government in the winter of 2003, The Commissioners, the <br />Board of Health, and the Board of the Animal Protection Society, Inc. heard a presentation by <br />HSUS staff on August 28, 2003 detailing the release of the Final Report and its <br />recommendations for improvement. On September 16, 2003 County staff returned to the Boarc <br />of County Commissioners with a potential process for naming a task force and providing a <br />preliminary listing of major topics within the HSUS report that the Task Force could begin to <br />address, if so directed by the BOCC, <br />On December 1, 2004, the BOCC authorized the appointment of an 11-member Animal Shelter <br />Operations Task Force to analyze findings from the HSUS Final Report and asked that they <br />return with recommendations on the principal issue of future governance/management of the <br />Shelter at the BOCC work session on April 1. <br />
