ORANGE COUNTY
BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS
ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT
Meeting Date: April 20, 2004
Action Agenda
Item No. _
SUBJECT: Orange County Senior Games
DEPARTMENT: County Manager, Carrboro
Recreation and Parks
Department
PUBLIC HEARING: (YIN) No
ATTACHMENT(S):
Proclamation
INFORMATION CONTACT:
Karen Berry, 918-7372
Carrboro Recreation & Parks
TELEPHONE NUMBERS:
Carrboro: 918-7372
PURPOSE: To proclaim the weeks of May 3 through May 27, 2004 as Orange County Senior
Games Events Days and to encourage citizens age ,56 and aver to participate,
BACKGROUND: The first Orange County Senior Games were held in May 1988 with 69
participants in athletic events ranging from softball throw to tennis, In 2003, 168 seniors
competed in various events. The resulting participation number was 696, The event categories
offered will grow from 15 in 2003 to 19 in 2004, The event categories represent an actual 69
events offered to men, women, doubles and mixed doubles in 9 different age groups, The
season will conclude with an awards ceremony and dinner, attended by athletes, friends and
family. The benefits to the participants and to the volunteers are great. Many seniors get
involved for the sheer fun and fellowship that the games offer. Others use the competitions as
motivators for daily training, The games strengthen confidence as well as muscles. Many
qualify to progress to the state and national senior games,
FINANCIAL IMPACT: The financial impact is already addressed by the county budget in the
allocated funds for designated staff of the Department on Aging and Recreation and Parks
Department who work with this program, Carrboro Recreation and Parks and Chapel Hill Parks
and Recreation additionally absorb a portion of the games in their budget for designated staff,
RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board of County
Commissioners approve the proclamation and declare May 3 through 27 2004 as Orange
County Senior Games Events Days,
