Project References / Lake Orange Intake Tower / 18 <br /> Cobbs Creek Dam, River Intake, Pump Station and <br /> Pipeline for New Regional Water Supply Reservoir <br /> COLUMBIA, VA <br /> VIOL <br /> SERVICES The new $280 million Cobbs Creek Regional Water Supply <br /> Borrow Study Reservoir, with a 15.5 billion gallon raw water storage capacity, <br /> Construction Phase is designed to meet regional customer needs for the next 50 <br /> Engineering years. <br /> Dam Engineering Schnabel performed all geotechnical and geological <br /> Excavation Design Support investigations as part of our evaluation of different dam types <br /> Geological Investigation and alignments; the earth embankment option was selected <br /> Geophysical Site Investigation because bedrock was too deep for a RCC dam. Schnabel <br /> provided all geotechnical, structural, and hydraulic design <br /> Geostructural Engineering services for the 160-foot-high, 4,850-foot-long primary <br /> Geotechnical Engineering embankment dam; a 30-foot-high, 800-foot-long saddle dam; <br /> Geotechnical Investigation outlet works (tower, conduit, and energy dissipater); and <br /> structural overflow spillway. As part of the design geotechnical <br /> Hydraulic Engineering investigation, explorations were performed within the reservoir <br /> Materials Testing limits to identify potential on-site borrow sources as well as <br /> Numerical Analysis locations of potential seepage from the reservoir. This work <br /> Structural Engineering included geophysical surveys, test borings, and test pits for the <br /> main dam, saddle dam, and perimeter access road dam. <br /> OWNER/CLIENT The main dam and saddle dam also include chimney and <br /> County of Henrico blanket drains to filter and collect seepage, which can be <br /> Arcadis, US monitored remotely with instrumented weirs. The embankments <br /> also include vibrating wire piezometers and fiber optic <br /> Paul Peterson distributed temperature-sensing system to monitor seepage <br /> P: 757.873.4347 through the main dam. <br /> E: paul.peterson@arcadis-us.
