Project References / Lake Orange Intake Tower / 14 <br /> Ragged Mountain Dam <br /> CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA <br /> 1W <br /> s. <br /> SERVICES Rivanna Water & Sewer Authority (RWSA) initially contracted <br /> Alternatives Analysis with Schnabel to provide a peer review of the conceptual design <br /> Community Outreach for a roller compacted concrete replacement dam to address <br /> Construction Monitoring and dam safety concerns and increase water supply. Schnabel <br /> QA/QC recommended the dam be an earthfill dam at a cost saving to <br /> Cost Estimating RWSA of more than $20 million. RWSA retained Schnabel to <br /> Dam Engineering Design <br /> perform final design for the project. <br /> Flood Inundation Studies Schnabel provided preliminary design services including <br /> Foundation Grouting Design detailed field explorations to define subsurface conditions at <br /> Geotechnical Evaluation the dam site. Schnabel also performed a hydrologic study of <br /> Hydrologic Watershed the watershed and a hydraulic analysis to evaluate and select <br /> Modeling an economical spillway system. Seepage and stability modeling <br /> Periodic Inspections were performed for the embankment and foundation and <br /> reservoir rim seepage potential was also evaluated. This was a <br /> Permitting Assistance pump diversion project so Schnabel interacted with the Owner <br /> Tunnel Design and a subconsultant for the design of the inlet/outlet gates and <br /> water supply piping. The Schnabel investigation program and <br /> OWNER/CLIENT design were reviewed by an independent technical review team. <br /> Rivanna Water & Sewer <br /> Authority The final design consisted of a 125-ft high zoned embankment <br /> Jennifer Whitaker, PE with a tunnel through the right abutment. The tunnel was <br /> P: 434.977.2970 ext.104 designed to accommodate a 36" pressure raw water supply <br /> E: jhitaker@rivanna.org conduit and serve as the principal spillway. A rock cut channel <br /> was design to serve as the auxiliary spillway to pass the Probable <br /> Maximum Precipitation storm event. Schnabel interacted <br /> AWARDS extensively with local citizen, environmental, and government <br /> 2014 ACEC Virginia, Honor entities to identify concerns and worked to reduce community <br /> Award, Engineering impacts. Construction completed in 2014. <br /> Excellence Awards <br /> Build Better.Together. <br />
