Americans are 26 times more likely to be murdered with guns than <br /> people in other developed countries. North Carolina ranks 23rd amongst states for gun deaths in <br /> the United States with an average of 1,636 deaths every year with 54% of gun-related deaths by <br /> suicide. Orange County supports efforts to enact commonsense gun safety laws and educate the <br /> community on gun safety. By wearing orange on June 7, 2024, Americans will raise awareness <br /> about gun violence and honor the lives and lost human potential of Americans stolen by gun <br /> violence. <br /> The annual Gun Violence Awareness Day gathering is scheduled for June 7, 2024 at 12:00 pm <br /> at the Peace and Justice Plaza in Chapel Hill. <br /> FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact applicable to consideration of the attached <br /> proclamation. <br /> SOCIAL JUSTICE IMPACT: There is no Orange County Social Justice Goal impact applicable <br /> to consideration of the attached proclamation. <br /> ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT: There is no Orange County Environmental Responsibility Goal <br /> impact applicable to consideration of the attached proclamation. <br /> RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve the proclamation <br /> and authorize the Chair to sign. <br />
