(100-300 words)

EmPOWERment will partner with SolarEquity whose
experience has been as a key stakeholder in the
installation of rooftop solar on 15 HFH homes in Orange
County, securing the donation of 260 panels while also
donating $10,000 to help cover labor costs. They are also
working with CASA, a local non-profit that provides
affordable housing, to install rooftop solar on the Bryan
Place Apartments in Durham County.
Yes
EmPOWERment
Inc (EI) pays its
employees a
living wage. Yes,
EI is an Orange
County Living
Wage Certified
Employer.
SolarEquity is a
non-profit
comprised of UNC
student
volunteers.
3
2
70 150
Rooftop Solar on EmPOWERment's Peach Apartments
EmPOWERment Inc. (EI) is building an apartment
building. As a partner, SolarEquity will install rooftop solar
on The PEACH Apartments, a rental complex for ten
low-income and very low-income families. Installing
rooftop solar will mitigate carbon emissions while
decreasing the target population’s energy burden. Grant
funding will be dedicated to establishing a 42.075 kW
system, reducing each apartment unit’s energy bill by an
average of $46 monthly. There will be 2- studio
apartments, 4- one-bedroom units, 3- two-bedroom units,
and 1 -three-bedroom units. The rooftop solar installation
will benefit around 26 individuals on average at any given
time. Since the apartments are available for rent, the
lifetime of the solar panels is projected to be 30 years.
The system will likely benefit far more than ten different
families, depending on the tenant turnover rate. EI will
receive a reduced energy bill from Duke Energy. The
savings will be passed on to the tenants based on the
number of bedrooms per unit. The apartments are only
available to those earning 30% AMI, ensuring that the
benefits of reduced energy bills are restricted to very
low-income people subjected to overwhelming energy
burdens. EI’s clients are comprised of low-wealth and
communities of color. Of EI’s 62 owned and managed
households, 50% are African American, 39% are
Hispanic, and 10% are White, the remainder identifying
as “Other.” 74.8% of the heads of household are women,
and 85% are African American or Latino. Of the twelve
units in the Pine Knolls community, 80% of the homes are
African American, with 60% having female heads of
households. The construction of the PEACH Apartments
will be completed in 1Q of 2024, and the solar installation
will take place in the weeks after that.
DocuSign Envelope ID: EB7B9CC8-B910-4965-AF93-0969E3E03E78
