Methane Avoided CO2, Formula: co2 = impact [lbs_diverted] * 2.6
Tomatoes Formula: impact [tomato_plants] = impact
[lbs_compost_produced] * 0.5
Formula: impact [tomatoes] = impact [tomato_plants] * 15
Vehicles Miles driven equivalent: "The average passenger vehicle
emits about 404 grams of CO2 per mile." miles_driven = co2 *
453.59237 / 404 (1 lb = 453.59237 grams)
Moreover, we are experiencing a reduction in emissions based on
the food choices and make-up of the meals we serve to the members
in our community via the Culinary Unit. With our partnership
through Carrboro Farmers Market, we are able to adopt a climate-
friendly diet that is primarily plant-based and focused on reducing
meat, dairy and eggs in favor of more sustainable and locally-sourced
proteins. Based on recent studies citing mean greenhouse gas
emissions in pounds of CO2 equivalents per day, if just one of our
members shifted their eating habits from being a “high meat-eater”
to being a “low meat-eater”, there would be a 35% decrease in their
greenhouse emissions per day, or 5.55 pounds of CO2 e per day
(Scarborough, Appleby, Mizdrak et al, 2014). This amounts to
2025.75 pounds less (or just over 1 ton) of CO2e per year for just one
member in our clubhouse. Considering that Club Nova has an
average daily attendance of 20 members per day as of August 2023,
if all of our members consumed one plant-based meal at Club Nova
per day, collectively they would be emitting 111 pounds less of CO2e
per day which is a total of emitting 40,515 pounds or 20.26 tons less
of CO2e per year! This reduction in CO2e per day will have a lasting
and exponential impact over time. As we continue to build up our
daily attendance and membership base in our new, state-of-the art,
electric and energy efficient facility, we project Club Nova will be
able to serve up to 100 individuals per day. Therefore, once we are
at full capacity and have realized these goals, our annual CO2e
reduction will be 101.3 tons per year!

These reduction calculations in greenhouse gas emissions and waste
diversion/compost efforts are projections based on our current
efforts with regard to our partnerships with the Carrboro Farmers
Market and Compost Now, respectively. Combined with the other
efforts proposed in our project proposal related to enhancements
and improvements to our garden (related to better quality
equipment to promote sustainability, raised garden beds, seeds and
plants) as well as our emerging partnerships with NC Botanical
Garden, conservation and Therapeutic Horticulture, we project that
these reductions in greenhouse gas emissions will be accelerated
even further and in ways that we are unable to predict or have yet to
collect data on. We are excited for increasing our reductions in
greenhouse gas emissions in the context of potential advancements
and developments related to the sustainability efforts proposed in
our project outline and garden. We believe that the work we are
currently doing, with regard to increasing plant-based proteins in our
meals served and waste reduction through composting, will have an
DocuSign Envelope ID: A9B18E2F-7835-4086-B808-E21D1F44AE18
