68
Nest 54 Biological Inventory Report Orange County,N.C.
• Odocoileus virginianus (white-tailed deer)
• Meleagris gallopavo (wild turkey)
• Didelphis virginiana (Virginia opossum)
• Procyon ltor(racoon)
• Canis latrans (coyote)
These communities do not possess unusually large or otherwise noteworthy specimen trees.
The forests appear to be even-aged, naturally regenerated stands. Generally, trees that are
located along property boundaries, or on property corners, will show the highest degree of
character and age;however, trees possessing such characteristics were not observed during
the field investigations.
Piedmont Headwater Stream Forest (Typic Subtype)
This community type encompasses streams S1-S4 and the floodplains associated with
them. Species indicative of this area include, but are not limited to, the following:
• Liriodendron tulipifera var. tulipifera (yellow poplar)
• Acer rubrum var. rubrum (red maple)
• Liquidambar styracijlua (sweetgum)
• Fagus grandifolia var. caroliniana (American beech)
• Pinus taeda (loblolly pine)
• Lonicera japonica (Japanese honeysuckle)
• Elaeagnus umbellata (autumn-olive)
Like the Dry-Mesic Oak-Hickory and Mesic Mixed Hardwood forests, sunlight availability
to the forest floor is limited. As a result, overall floral and faunal diversity is low when
compared to communities exhibiting greater amounts of sunlight availability and structural
heterogeneity. Species indicative of this community type are the same as those previously
listed for the Mesic Mixed Hardwood community(i.e., forest interior species).
Pine Forest
This community type is located on the upland slopes adjacent to streams S2, S3 and S4 in
the southeastern half of the PSA. Plant species indicative of this community are the same
as previously listed for the Piedmont Headwater Stream Forest; however, loblolly pine is
dominant and comprises 80-90% of the overstory composition.
Like the previously described closed-canopy communities, sunlight availability to the
forest floor is also limited in this pine-dominated forest community. As a result, overall
floral and faunal diversity is low, when compared to communities exhibiting greater
amounts of sunlight availability and structural heterogeneity. Species indicative of this
community type are the same as those previously listed for the Mesic Mixed Hardwood
and Piedmont Headwater Stream Forest communities (i.e., forest interior species).
4 April 2023
