118
similar model, the Millers' response to the introduction of the Project seemed refreshingly
inviting of and excited for the Nest to join and contribute to the local community.
Other conversations explored questions that initially arose at the May 24 community
meeting. Gary Colen and Zinho Deprez discussed the nature of the lodging operation
relative to the retreat center and community space. There may have been some concern
among community meeting attendees about the manner in which the camp and lodging
operation would be offered to the community. For example, there may have been concern
about the prospect of long-term tenants taking up in the campsite area. We are hopeful
these discussions helped to explain that the intention is for the camp to be aimed at and
the operation to be geared toward organized groups that would patronize The Nest for
purposeful retreats and conferences. The prospect of targeting or marketing to longer
term or even merely itinerant guests would run counter to these objectives.
It was observed that the relaxed, less formal setting of the June 20, 2023 meeting was
helpful for attendees to let their guards down and progress into comfortable conversation
about the project.
Community Engagement Since June 20, 2023
July 24, 2023 Follow-up Letter to Notice Neighbors and Community Meeting Attendees
Ryan Moffitt sent a follow-up letter to the property owners within the ordinance-required
notice radius, and all individuals in attendance at the May community meeting. Copies of
the letter are provided with this summary.
Miscellaneous Neighbor Engagement
Rebecca Sorensen has had positive follow up telephone and email correspondence with
Beth Hooten, Ed Cockrell and a shared meal with Ben Miller and Max Miller.
Ryan Moffitt entertained an inquisitive telephone call from with Linda Key, who resides at
4630 Lloydtown Road. She received the invitation to the initial meeting and was unable
to attend. Ms. Key was mostly curious to learn more about the project. As an individual
who lives alone, she wanted to ensure that her safety would not be compromised by the
proposed use. The nature and mission of the applicants was explained and the hope to
use the property to advance educational and training efforts was positively received.
Ryan Moffitt made outreach to by telephone and email to Jack Pless, who owns property
and resides at 4001 Lloydtown Road. Mr. Pless attended the community meeting and
expressed concerns about guests of The Nest wandering off-property and trespassing
onto his property. Outreach to Mr. Pless has been in an attempt to address those
concerns and share measures that The Nest has proposed as conditions to eliminate or
discourage the risks he has identified.
