66
10.0 Crash Data Analysis
Through NCDOT's Traffic Engineering Accident Analysis System (TEAAS), crash
records were obtained for the study intersections for the time period between November
2017 and November 2022. All crash data reports are included in the Appendix. US 70
Alt. and Lawrence Road and US 70 at US 70 Alt. are both noted intersections as part of
the North Carolina Highway Safety Improvement Program (HSIP). These intersections
have been ranked in the HSIP for 2020 through 2022 indicating ongoing safety issues at
these locations. A severity index of 8.4 is the threshold for locations that have more
serious crashes.
US 70 Alt. at Lawrence Road
There were 19 reported crashes identified at the intersection of US 70 Alt. and Lawrence
Road. There were no fatal or Class A crashes reported at this intersection, however,
there was one (1) Class B crash, two (2) Class C crashes, and 16 property-damage only
crashes reported, resulting in a crash severity index of 2.17. Angle crashes were the
most prevalent crash type reported (accounting for 10 crashes — approximately 53% of
the total crashes reported). There were five (5) left-turn and two (2) rear-end crashes
(accounting for 26% and 11%, respectively).
US 70 Alt. at NC 86
There were 14 reported crashes identified at the intersection of US 70 Alt. and NC 86
during the analysis period. There were no fatal or Class A crashes reported at this
intersection, however, there was one (1) Class B crash, four (4) Class C crashes, and
nine (9) property-damage only crashes reported, resulting in a crash severity index of
3.64. Rear-end crashes were the most prevalent crash type reported (accounting for six
(6) crashes — approximately 43% of the total crashes reported). There were two (2) left-
turn and two (2) angle crashes (accounting for 14% each).
US 70 at Lawrence Road
There were 21 reported crashes identified at the intersection of US 70 and Lawrence
Road. There were no fatal or Class A crashes reported at this intersection, however,
there were two (2) Class B crashes, seven (7) Class C crashes, and 12 property-
damage only crashes reported, resulting in a crash severity index of 4.17. Rear-end
crashes were the most prevalent crash type reported (accounting for 15 crashes —
approximately 71% of the total crashes reported).
US 70 at US 70 Alt.
There were 23 reported crashes identified at the intersection of US 70 and US 70 Alt.
There were no fatal crashes reported at this intersection, however, there was one (1)
Class A crash, six (6) Class B crashes, four (4) Class C crashes, and 12 property-
damage only crashes reported, resulting in a crash severity index of 7.51.
