51
5.0 Projected Traffic Volumes
5.1 Existing Traffic
AM peak hour (7:00 to 9:00 AM) and PM peak hour (4:00 to 6:00 PM) turning movement
and pedestrian/bicycle counts were performed at the following intersections:
• US 70 Alt. at Lawrence Road September 14, 2022
• US 70 Alt. at NC 86 November 2, 2022
• US 70 at Lawrence Road November 2, 2022
• US 70 Alt. at US 70 November 2, 2022
The existing (2022) AM and PM peak hour traffic volumes are shown on Figures 5.1
and 5.2, and the traffic count data is included in the Appendix. The summaries include
diagrams showing vehicles, trucks, pedestrians, and bicycles. Little to no pedestrian and
bicycle activity was observed in the data collection at the study area intersections.
5.2 Historic Growth Traffic
Historic growth traffic is the increase in traffic due to usage increases and non-specific
growth throughout the area. Based on the historic AADT information in the area and
conversations with NCDOT and the County, an annual growth rate of 1.5% per year was
applied to the existing traffic up to the future study years. The projected background
(2025) AM and PM peak hour traffic volumes are shown on Figures 5.1 and 5.2.
5.3 Site Traffic
The proposed site traffic was generated and assigned to the adjacent roadway network
according to the distribution discussed previously in Section 4.0. The total (2025) AM
and PM site traffic volumes are shown on Figures 5.3 and 5.4.
5.4 Build-Out Traffic
To obtain the projected build-out traffic volumes, the projected site traffic was added to
the projected background traffic. Traffic volume calculations are detailed in intersection
spreadsheets included in the Appendix of this report. The projected build-out (2025) AM
and PM peak hour traffic volumes are shown on Figures 5.3 and 5.4.
