50
US 70 Multimodal Corridor Study
Due to their proximity to at-grade rail crossings, several signals in Mebane (Moore Street, 3rd Street, 4t" Street,
and 5t" Street) require interconnection with the rail crossing signals and crossing gates to preempt normal
traffic signal operation in the presence of a train. This preemption prevents conflicting signal combinations
between the relevant traffic control devices. LOS is not calculated for preemptive operation, but such
conditions obviously add delay and can create long vehicle queues.
Table 10 2022 Intersections AM and PM Peak Hour LOS Summary
ID Intersection and A roach Traffic Existing(2022) Traffic Existing(2022)
pp Control AM FM ID Intersection and Approach
Control At'l I F1'l
3`d St&US 70-(Center St) B-16.2 B-10.6 Orange High School Rd&US 70 B-16.3 C-21.2
.......................................................
Eastbound B-1;.'1 l-1'1.4 Eastbound A-9.3 A-6.1
5 ed
ign
1 Westbound Signalized B-13.4 A-4.4 Westbound C-21.1 C-26.6
................................................. ......................................................... ......................................................
Northbound B-'14.7 B-15.7 Southbound C-21.8 C-29.1
.........................................................
5outhbou d C-22.7 C-26.7 St.'_1+IargsRd&US70 C-22.9 C-26.8
......................-.................................................................................................................
4 St&LIS 70(Center St] A-6.7 B-11.9 Eastbound C-20.3 B-10.4
...........................................:...........................:..............:.........:.......................................... ......................................................... ......................................................................................................................................... ......................................................
Eastbound A-6.4 B-14.2 9 Westbound Signalized B-15.0 C-?5.6
Signalized .................... -
......................................................
Westbound }-5.7 A-9.3 Northbound C-30..'' The length of vehicle queues waiting to enter the
intersection-while related to delay-is not explicitly considered in calculating LOS. A separate inspection of
observed/estimated queue length is required. Long vehicle queues have the potential to create problems
typically by:
• Exceeding available storage
• Preventing turning vehicles from accessing turn lanes due while stuck in a through lane queue
• Increasing rear-end crashes due to unexpected queues especially around curves
• Increasing potential for blocked intersections (gridlock), driveways, crosswalks, and railroad tracks
41 Existing Conditions and Critical Issues
