SUMMARY OF ACCOMPLISHMENTS <br />Youth Tobacco-Use Prevention Project, Orange County Health Department <br />The following is a summary of highlighted activities carried out as part of the Orange <br />County Health Department's Youth Tobacco-Use Prevention Project, funded by a grant from the <br />Health and Wellness Trust Fund Commission (HWTFC) of North Carolina. <br />July, 200.3 <br />Orange County Schools Pass 100% Tobacco-Free Schools Policy <br />The Orange Co. Health Department Director consulted with the Orange County School District <br />on their decision to go 100% Tobacco Free for the 2003-2004.. The Health Department provided assistant <br />superintendent with educational materials and links to cessation resources. <br />August, 200.3 <br />Youth Tobacco-Use Prevention Project Manager Position Filled <br />The Orange County Health Department hired a Project Manager for the Youth Tobacco-Use <br />Prevention Project in early August. The project manager, with the Health Promotion and Educational <br />Services (HPES) Division Director, assumed responsibility and management of the project.. <br />Project Manager Training <br />The Project Manager was trained in areas relevant to the effective implementation of the grant's <br />goals and objectives. The Project Manager also met with grant evaluators and state technical assistance <br />experts regarding proper progress reporting and best practices, <br />September-October, 2003 <br />Proiect Partnership Development <br />The Project Manager and Director of the HPES Division Director established community <br />partnerships and collaboration commitment from: <br />• Orange Coanty Schools through the endorsement of the project by Superintendent, Dr. <br />Shirley Carraway, principals of Orange High School, Cedar Ridge High School, C.W.. <br />Stanford Middle School, A.L. Stanback Middle School, the Healthful Living <br />Coordinator, Donna Williams, and high school health and PE. teachers.. <br />• Chapel Hill/Carr°boro City Schools through the endorsement of the project by <br />Superintendent, Dr. Neil Pedersen, Health Coordinator, Stephanie Willis, high school <br />substance abuse coordinators, and Student Health Advisory Council (SHAG). <br />• Adolescent Parenting Program (APP) of Orange County through the endorsement of the <br />project by Program Coordinator, Valerie Russel, and high school case coordinators. <br />Community-based Outreach <br />Project Manager attended Octoberfest fair in Efland-Cheeks, Equity and Excellence Day at Smith <br />Middle School, and Latino Family Day and United Church (Chapel Hill), Youth were asked to sign <br />smoke-free pledges and given tobacco prevention education materials. <br />Alternative to Suspension (ATSI Program Development <br />A draft proposal for the ATS Program was developed and sent to principals at OCS high schools <br />and middle schools, as well as the superintendent, to review. <br />School-based Outreach <br />
