Specifically, this project helps <br />protect the natural environment by reducing CO2 emissions and <br />repairing the aging stock of homes in Orange County. Qualified applicants must live in <br />Orange County, own their own home, owe no back taxes, and <br />have an annual income below 80% of the area median income. <br />Of the most recent group of applicants for program, one in four <br />(24%) are considered extremely low income, earning below <br />30% AMI. This is less than $19,100 annually for a single-person <br />household. The average annual income of the whole group was <br />$24,500. Elderly individuals were also highly served by the <br />Home Preservation program. Last year, the average age served <br />was 68. Further, 37% had a disability present in the home and <br />four were veterans. About 70% of families served have a female <br />head of household. <br /> <br />More than 90% of Home Preservation repair recipients are <br />Black. Many are members of foundational Black families of <br />Orange County, who have lived in this area for generations. <br />Many are living in homes that were built by their parents or <br />grandparents, which they are now in danger of having to give <br />up to due rising home values and property taxes.
