Melany Earnhardt Breen an attorne <br />with the Environmental Poverty Law Program (Hillsborough, NC) to obtain funding for a <br />full-time attorney position. As this attomey, my responsibilities would include <br />community education and outreach on environmental issues to low-income residents in <br />North Carolina; coordinating various projects, including the lead poisoning prevention <br />project; and providing direct legal representation and assistance to legal services clients <br />on environmental issues. In the past, l have worked with the Southern Environmental <br />Law Center (Chapel Hill) and the Environmental Law Communi Clinic (Berkelev. <br />Califomial. In addition, while at the University of North Carolina School of Law, I worked <br />in the Civil Legal Assistance Clinic,.where I provided re resentation to low-income <br />residents of North Carolina on various civil Issues. <br />VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE: In the past I have worked most recently with the Chapel Hill <br />office of the Southern Environmental Law Center, anon-profit organization working on <br />environmental issues throughout the south. In particular I. worked on public trust and <br />hog farming Issues. 1 have also worked with the Environmental Law Communi <br />Program in Hillsborough, N.C., an organization dedicated to assisting low-income <br />individuals and communities with environmental issues. I have volunteered with various <br />environmental organizations, including the Student Environmental Action Coalition, <br />Environmental Defense Fund and the Conservation Council for North Carolina. I am <br />currently working with a group of concerned citizens from throughout North Carolina to <br />pass environmental justice legislation in the North Carolina General Assembly. <br />EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE:1 graduated from the University of North Carolina at <br />Chapel Hill in 1994 with a Bachelor of Arts in interdiscipiinarvStudles in Environmental <br />Policy. I recently graduated from UNC's School of Law in May, where 1 had the <br />opportunity to take courses in general environmental law issues, ocean and coastal law <br />and land use law. In particular, I completed a course taught by David Owens a,professor <br />at the Institute of Governmentx who specializes in land use.planning issues. In this <br />course, we covered various planning issues, Including zoning nonconformities <br />variances and the legality of local governing. boards and board of adjustment decisions. <br />® OTHER COMMENTS: i have lived in Orange CountYfor approximately eiahtyears.
