Page 10 of 20 <br /> <br />knowledge and inspiration to other faith communities in <br />Orange County and beyond to take similar actions. <br />The demographics of the population around Binkley is diverse <br />in color, ethnicity, age, and income. Our congregational <br />membership is reflective of that diversity. Though church <br />membership is skewed more to white and middle-class, Binkley <br />has since its founding in 1958 been very socially conscious and <br />actively engaged in social justice issues, including climate <br />justice. <br />By installing and additional 46 solar panels, we anticipate an <br />addition 32,500 lbs of carbon reduction and cost savings that <br />we have experienced from the 50 solar panels we installed in <br />mid-2016, which so far has produced 119.55 MWh of electricity <br />and diverting 185,119.98 lbs. of carbon release into the <br />atmosphere. <br />[Notably, Binkley’s Triple-Stream Waste Diversion initiative <br />conceived and managed by Earth Ministries members Linda <br />Bourne and Karin Mills was selected a winner and one of five <br />inspiring faith communities nationally in The Cool <br />Congregation Challenge conducted by Interfaith Power & <br />Light. See: https://youtu.be/LQQw3rGDi_E In our first year of <br />composting, from May 15 to December 31, 2018, Binkley <br />diverted 10.03 tons (20,060 pounds) of compostable waste <br />from the landfill. As of August 2023, Binkley has now diverted <br />67 tons of compostable waste from the landfill. <br />15.
