All of these activities
require training provided by staff and/or experienced volunteers.
*Dog walking is probably our most popular activity, with the majority of our
volunteers trained to walk dogs, if nothing else,
*Cleaning cat cages (with staff) before "open hours." (This is the only
activity that allows volunteers to be in the shelter when we are not open to
the public).
*Bathing and grooming dogs and puppies is very helpful when adopters request a
bath before their adoption.
*Socialization of all of our animals: dogs, cats, puppies, kittens, rabbits,
hamsters, etc. (i.e. making them more adoptable!!)
*Adoption Counseling
*Courier takes animals to and from the shelter for medical attention at the
clinic (spay/nueter mostly).
*Behavior Assessments (Professionals only, of course)
*Information Guides help "direct traffic" in our front lobby during our busiest
hours.. This helps relieve the crowds at the front desk by directing people to
the animals, explaining the importance of sanitation, answering questions and
directing them to the appropriate staff member if they have unusual questions.
`Clerical Work (usually on Wednesday nights during "Volunteer Night" but
occassionaly as needed during business hours)
*Matchmakers help potential adopters make a good match with an adoptable pet.
*Special Events: volunteers help a lot with many community events such as
adoptathon or awareness raising information booths
*Community Educators help the education coordinator present programs to
classrooms, church groups, and other groups around the county,
*Foster Parents
*Fundraising volunteers help the fundraising director plan and execute events
The list goes on with volunteers who help with strictly APS activities.. But I
think these are all that are only "shelter,"
I document participation by having each volunteer keep a personal time sheet in
a binder at the "Volunteer Center" as well as having them sign in and out on a
daily sign in log.. This way I can easily document the hours per volunteer, as
well as hours per day/week/month and so on I record the written information
into an excel) file periodically and contact people who have not met the
volunteer commitment for the month (8 hours min) to make sure they are happy
with their experiences and to see if there is anything that could make their
volunteer time better. If they no longer want to be a volunteer or I cannot
reach them after several tries, I deactivate their file.
Please let me know if there is any further information you need.
~~~, `.
~~ 1
In peace,
Amy
