~~
~~
Forsythe County Animal Shelter
(Forsythe County Department of Animal Control)
The county has around 300,000 people and the department shelter aboufi 8,300
animals per year.
The stand-alone department does not presently have a volunteer program or
coordinator. However, a coalition of {oval private non-profit humane societies
called Friends of the Shelter provides six "shelter hosts' who act as initial
"adoption counselors" who serve during peak adoption hours (Tuesday and
Thursday evenings and Saturday afternoons), These volunteers only talk with
people who have come to look at animals, but do not take animals out of their
confinement nor dp they take applications or follow through with the adoption
process.
On Saturdays, Friends of the Animals takes adoptable animals from the shelter
to high traffic commercial locations for off••site adoption process initiation. Shelter
employees do not participate off-site.
Forever Friends, another group of humane societies, has recently been given a
1500 square foot storefront in Hanes Mall and wi{I soon bring animals from the
shelter to that location for adoption proceedings on Saturday and Sunday
afternoons. This will be a totally volunteer staffed endeavor.
A new department director will take over the first week in April and is expected to
develop a more comprehensive program of using volunteers in the shelter far a
greater variety of tasks.
