~~ <br />Alamance County Animal Shelter <br />(Operated by the Burlington Police Department) <br />This open door shelter is the only government shelter in this county of about <br />130,000 people, The shelter housed over 5000 animals last year, There is a care <br />group of six and a secondary group of 14 or 15 volunteers who together give 25 <br />to 30 service hours per week in the existing 32 run shelter. Their duties include <br />cleaning, feeding, grooming and adoptions. <br />Volunteer applicants are interviewed by the shelter director who accepts less <br />than half.. Three or four former volunteers have been hired as part time kennel <br />and shelter workers, <br />Changes are coming, In four to six weeks, a 40 run adoption center will open <br />next to the existing shelter. Apart-time volunteer coordinator will be hired but will <br />have some other duties. An orientation and training program is in development, <br />New Hanover County Animal Shelter <br />(New Hanover County Health Department, Animal Services Division) <br />This open door shelter takes in about 4500 animals a year and receives limited <br />volunteer service from the public, about 10 hours per week, This is supplemented <br />by community service workers, about six or seven per year, who serve anywhere <br />from 24 to a few hundred hours in the shelter, The shelter manager coordinates <br />the volunteers for in-shelter service. <br />Special events, such as an Adopt-a-thon and two annual free rabies clinics, also <br />are partly staffed by volunteers, The shelter solicits volunteers far these events <br />via advertisements and ps,a.'s The hours are not tracked. <br />The Humane Society of New Hanover County operates a shelter very nearby the <br />county's and houses about 1200 animals per year, With only two or three paid <br />staff, this shelter makes extensive use of volunteers, The two shelters cooperate <br />over a range of animal issues. <br />
