1=ISUS Volunteer 1VIanagelrtr><ent purvey Results
The HSUS conducted an online survey of 289 animal shelter volunteer managers at the
end of 2002. This is the first national volunteer management survey conducted for the sheltering
field.
While the survey is not a representative sample, the results were interesting and
confirmed what we've suspected all along: Many shelters haven't taken the time to plan properly
and ensure the necessary management tools are in place to manage their volunteers successfully.
Here is a summary of some of the findings:
• Most of the organizations responding to the survey handle 5,000 animals or fewer
annually..
Animals Handled Per Year Number of Res ondents % of Res ondents
Less than 2,500 122 57%
2,501 - 5,000 27 12.6%
5,001 - 10,000 35 16.4%
10,001 + 30 14%

® Most respondents-44 percent-work for a private humane organization, 28 percent
work for a municipal anima] control agency, and the remaining 28 percent work with a
private organization that has a contract to provide housing or animal control services,
These demographics are consistent with previous HSUS surveys.
• Results indicate that most shelters are not taking full advantage of management tools that
would greatly help them improve their volunteer programs:

Tool Percent of respondents
usin the tool
Interviews or Orientations 73%
Liability Waivers 69%
A lications 66%
lob Descri lions 50%
Schedules 50%
Formal Training 46%
Volunteer Manuals 42%
Contracts 22%
Performance Reviews 7%
• Only 8 percent of respondents have afull-time paid volunteer coordinator, Shelters with
dedicated full-time coordinators tend to be the ones that handle larger numbers of animals
(5,000 or more animals per year),
Volunteer ManagemenC AGuide forAnimal Care Organizations
©The Numane Sociery of the United Smtes
~ ~G Cat
~~ ~
4
