(~~
Is there a downturn in Shelter volunteerism when there is a change in manageme» ?!
Present APS volunteer management indicated there was a low level of volunteers back in
Tuly 2003, 279 hours, and that it had shot up to 365 hours in September, which may or
may not be attributable to a change in administrative leadership at the Orange County
shelter that occurred around that time.. APS also reports that volunteers express feeling
more welcome arrd involved today and appear to he staying on boazd longer..
In response to an earlier query, APS Vas also provided a listing of current volunteer
activities and statistical information on volunteer origins - as an example -for
January 2004. See -Attachment D.)
Animal Control officers conduct some education and outreach activities Animal Control
in the regular course of their prevention and enforcement duties. The preliminary county
budget did not provided for specific outreach or education services above and beyond
that of the proposed Adoption, Foster Home, and Volunteer Manager. The preliminary
budget did take into consideration expenses needed for publications and training
associated with public education and outreach. A revised budget could take additional
issues and ideas from the Task Force on supportive services into consideration. Staff also
assumed that the APS would likely continue to be engaged, outside of the shelter
operation, in its own humane efforts and priorities through paid staff or volunteers.
