<br />STAFF RESPONSES TO QUESTIONS RAISED BY THE TASI{ FORCE <br />FROM THE PUBLIC LISTENING SESSION <br />I{en Chavious, Finance Director, advises: The County of Orange is a public <br />govermnental body that is tax exempt under Section 501 (c) (1) of the Internal Revenue <br />Code. Under current tax income regulations, contributions to local units of government, <br />for goverrunent purposes, aze entitled to be treated as tax-deductible gifts. Volunteer <br />hours are no longer an allowed deductible. (A sample letter is attached that is provided <br />when citizens make donations to the County -Attachment A) <br />Orange County government has a tradition of bringing citizens to the table, The Board of <br />County Conunissioners has 32 standing boards, committees, and commissions wherein <br />they appoint approximately .320 persons to serve in planning and advisory roles in <br />plazming, economic development, human services, the environment, parks development, <br />and other fields. <br />A quick survey of county depaztments specializing inhuman and community services <br />revealed nearly 600 individual citizens who aid and support the county in a variety of <br />non-paid functions, including: <br />Companionship for the elderly <br />Special projects, processing duties, and genealogic research <br />Coaching and assistant coaching in youth athletics <br />Trail workers <br />Court observers and "go-fees" <br />Organizing special events <br />Leading workshops <br />Classroom helpers for early childhood education <br />Seniors who adopt a classroom <br />Fund raising and resource development <br />Mentoring adolescent parents <br />Recruiting foster parents <br />Preparing newsletters <br />Staffing inforn~ation desks <br />Communicating with non-English speakers during emergencies <br />Helping with used book sales <br />Front desk operations <br />Program assistants for wellness events <br />
