15
Chair Bedford asked if it should include the phrase "diversifying the tax base."
Travis Myren suggested the phrase "expand and diversify the tax base."
Chair Bedford said some of this is tied to the Comprehensive Land Use Plan. She said
making it explicit in the strategic plan is good.
Commissioner Hamilton said it should be explicitly stated.
Vice-Chair Greene suggested "Continue active recruitment of businesses to increase and
diversify the tax base." She said she was fine with either"increase" or"expand."
Commissioner McKee said he thought it deserved a separate bullet to show it's a priority.
Chair Bedford said that the suggestion of more spaces to attend performances was likely
related to performances spaces for children's theater.
Vice-Chair Greene said they could add something to the objectives to recognize that the
arts are part of the economy.
Chair Bedford thought it might be captured in the objective "Provide resources to small,
creative, and agro-businesses that add character and quality of life to our community to attract
employers, employees, and visitors."
Commissioner Hamilton said the first objective should read "Provide family-oriented and
inclusive programming and other cultural events for residents and visitors."
Chair Bedford noted that the plan is for 5 years, and not everything can be done in that
time frame.
Charline Kirongozi made two groups of commissioners to improve the language for the
Social Justice and Stewardship and Advocacy Guiding Principles. The groups worked
independently on different sides of the room for about 10 minutes and then came back together
to share their ideas.
For the Social Justice Guiding Principle, the working group suggested the statement, "We
reject oppression and inequity by ensuring fair and equitable treatment of all people." The Board
accepted the change.
For the Stewardship and Advocacy Guiding Principles, the working group suggested the
statement, "We foster opportunities to innovate and make proactive data supported decisions and
advocate to state and federal governments in response to our community's diverse needs and to
make best use of our resources."
After some discussion, the Board agreed on the following statement:
"We make proactive data supported decisions and advocate to local, state and federal
governments in response to our community's needs in a way that best utilizes our resources."
Slide #23
Next Steps
IFIR Complete the final plan.
.s,
0 Final adoption in February 2024.
I&N In alignment with the County's budgeting process, BerryDunn will develop
tools to assist with performance monitoring, reporting, and
implementation.
b
