2436
17. Are the impacted residents
already aware of the potential
positive and negative impacts
of your project and the steps
you are taking? If not, please
describe your plan to engage
with them and how you will act
based on their input:
We are working with the Carrboro Stormwater Manager and the
Stormwater Advisory Commission to conduct six education and
outreach events in areas that have stormwater-challenged
properties in Orange County. Teachers and students enrolled in
the after-school program funded by OCCCA will also be involved
in selection and outreach for the most effective bmp installation
sites in the underserved communities.
18. During and after the project,
what will your continued
engagement with the
community be?
To ensure long-term bmp maintenance, our contract requires
property owners to commit to maintaining their bmp for 5 years.
To ensure this, USS will continue to seek funding and pay USS
teachers and their afterschool (and/or summer) students to
perform site checks and provide Green Infrastructure
maintenance services every 1-2 years into perpetuity for bmp
installations on low-income properties. It is our goal to have
community funding so that we can offer Green Infrastructure
Apprenticeships to our youth and they can assist property owners
with maintenance, enabling USS’s continued and long-term, in-
person engagement with these residents and their community.
19. Please describe any other
aspect of your project that is
relevant to Social Justice and
Racial Equity:
Though the program will install real projects that will reduce CO2
emissions, sedimentation, erosion and waterway pollution in real
time, its biggest benefit is the important, practical, job-ready skills
it provides participating public school teachers and students, who
can’t help but educate others and expand the public’s
understanding and use of these sustainable stormwater best
management practices. In addition to their environmental
benefits, these bmp’s also beautify the neighborhood with native
and flowering plants that have historically only been associated
with wealthier (and generally white) neighborhoods and
homeowners’ associations.

Criterion 2 - Emissions Reduced

DocuSign Envelope ID: 2C2F66C4-424F-4660-AF8A-A623B6D7194E
