4 <br /> Brief Statement of Board/Commission's Assigned Charge and Responsibilities. <br /> a. Studying and making recommendations concerning problems in the field of human relations. <br /> b. Anticipating and discovering potential issues that may create animosity and unrest, and seeking <br /> solutions as they arise. <br /> c. Making recommendations designed to promote goodwill and harmony among groups in the <br /> county irrespective of the race, color, creed, religion, ancestry, national origin, sex, affectional <br /> preference, disability, age, marital statistics, political affiliation, or status with regard to public <br /> assistance. <br /> d. Monitoring and investigating appeals to complaints of discrimination <br /> e. Addressing and attempting to remedy the violence, tensions, polarization, and other harm <br /> created through the practices of discrimination, bias, hatred, and civil inequality; and <br /> f. Promoting harmonious relations with the County through hearings and due process of law. <br /> g. Enforce the Orange County Civil Rights Ordinance (1995) and other functions on behalf of the <br /> HRC as mandated by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development through its <br /> cooperative agreement with the County. <br /> What are your Board/Commission's most important accomplishments? <br /> Increased Awareness <br /> • Hosted a Pauli Murray Awards Ceremony in-person celebration including a keynote speaker, live <br /> entertainment, and food. Two awards were presented. <br /> • Hosted a Juneteenth celebration at the Hillsborough Library <br /> • Hosted a community book-read event held in November on modern slavery <br /> • A member of the HRC spoke at a City of Mebane meeting in support of subscribing to the <br /> Government Alliance on Race and Equity (GARE) <br /> Increased Board Capacity <br /> 1. Participated in several Board trainings: <br /> a. HRC Retreat held on August 5, 2023; HRC State Orientation held on August 8, 2023 <br /> b. State HRC Meeting participation (Fayetteville) September 26, 2023 <br /> c. Fair Housing Training held on September 30, 2023 <br /> 2. North Carolina Human Rights Workers' Conference 18-20 October 2023 <br /> 3. HRC is 92% staffed (11 out of 12 commissioners) <br /> Strategic Planning Initiative: <br /> 1. Strategic Planning Retreat held, with discussion regarding policy, process and draft ideas for the <br /> coming year. <br /> 2. Re-established partnership with the Orange County Community Remembrance Coalition <br /> (OCCRC) to preserve the history of the African American community in Orange County. <br /> 3. 400% organic growth in Facebook page engagement in the first quarter of the year. <br /> 4. Participated in the Orange County Strategic Review Feedback session <br />
