35
Describe this board/commission's activities/accomplishments in carrying out BOCC
goal(s)/priorities, if applicable.
• Ensure a community network of basic human services and infrastructure that
maintains, protects, and promotes the well-being of all county residents.
• BOH is the primary policy-making and adjudicatory body for the Health
Department and is charged with protecting and promoting the public health
of Orange County residents.
• Promote an interactive and engaging system of governance that reflects community
values.
• The Board of Health joined OCHD staff to collect Community Health
Opinion Surveys for the 2023 Community Health Assessment. Surveys
were conducted via door to door at residential homes and via community
events. Surveys were also available online. BOH Members also attended
community listening sessions to hear feedback from community members
about what they believe are priority issues with regard to health in Orange
County.
• Create, preserve, and protect a natural environment that includes clean water, clean
air, wildlife, important natural lands, and sustainable energy for present and future
generations.
• The Board adopted revised local Rules for Wastewater Treatment and
Disposal Systems, 2024. The revisions clarify existing language as part of
an effort to simplify and streamline the current rules. This represents
technological advances, standardized terminology, and practical
knowledge.
Describe the collaboration relationship(s) this particular board has with other advisory
boards and commissions?
The Health Director serves as the designee for several Board activities and
collaborative initiatives. The Board receives monthly updates via the Health
Director's Report, which shows meetings, presentations, and other
activities completed each month. Some of the local boards and governing
bodies that the Board of Health/Health Department have worked with
during this reporting period include:
o BOCC
o Alliance
o Carrboro Town Council
o Chapel Hill Town Council
o Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Board of Education
o DEAPR
o Family Success Alliance
o Healthy Carolinians of Orange County
o Hillsborough Board of Commissioners
o Opioid Advisor Committee
