33 <br /> What are your Board/Commission's most important accomplishments? <br /> • January 2023 — The BOH drafted and submitted a resolution in favor of adopting <br /> the T21 (Tobacco 21) amendment in North Carolina legislation. The Board of <br /> Health strongly supports that NC must increase the protections of our youth from <br /> vaping and nicotine addictions by: <br /> o Establishing a tobacco retailer permitting system. <br /> o Raising the minimum age of sales from 18 to 21 years of age. <br /> o Restoring local authority to adopt evidence-based regulations to reduce <br /> tobacco's impact on health the community. <br /> o Adopting other needed provisions of legal sales of tobacco products to <br /> match federal law. <br /> • March 2023 — The BOH reinstated an annual Board Retreat. This had not <br /> occurred for several years. The Board created/revised a vision and mission <br /> statement for the health department, which were adopted in April. The group also <br /> did some preliminary work regarding priorities for the department strategic plan. <br /> The new OCHD mission statement is: [The mission of the Orange County Health <br /> Department is] To promote and protect health, enhance quality of life, and <br /> preserve the environment for everyone in Orange County. <br /> The new OCHD vision statement is: [The vision of the Orange County Health <br /> Department is to] Create the conditions for everyone in Orange County to <br /> experience the highest attainable standard of health. <br /> • May 2023 — NC Local Health Department Accreditation Board awarded OCHD <br /> Re-Accreditation with Honors. The department missed 1 activity out of 147 <br /> activities. The department's collaborative work in the Gateway Village <br /> Community was noted as a Best Practice, as was the Board of Health's <br /> supportive relationship with the health director and the department, as evidenced <br /> through detailed Board of Health meeting minutes. <br /> • September 2023 — Fall NCPHA Conference, Concord, NC — While attending the <br /> Conference Orange County Health Department received two awards for our <br /> innovative collaborative work with the Gateway Village Community in <br /> Hillsborough: <br /> • GlaxoSmithKline Child Health Local Health Department Award for the <br /> development of an innovative program that has produced measurable, <br /> sustainable outcomes. All local health departments, as defined by NCGS <br /> 130A-2(5) were eligible for consideration. The award comes with a monetary <br /> grant of$10,000 to be used for activities such as special projects, staff <br /> development or educational materials. <br /> Dr. Sarah Morrow Health Department of the Year Award given to health <br /> departments for outstanding programs and efforts.
