ORANGE COUNTY BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br /> Meeting Date: June 18, 2002 - <br /> Action Agen <br /> Item No. <br /> SUBJECT: Contract with Center for Employment Training <br /> DEPARTMENT: Social Services PUBLIC HEARING: (YIN) No . <br /> ATTACHMENT(Sk INFORMATION CONTACT: <br /> Nancy Coston, ext 2800 <br /> Contract <br /> TELEPHONE NUMBERS: <br /> Hillsborough 732-8181 <br /> Chapel HIII 968401 <br /> Durham 688-7331 <br /> Mebane 336-2274031 <br /> PURPOSE: To reauthorize the contract with the Center for Employment Training. <br /> BACKGROUND: The Center for Employment Trampng (CETI located at the Golden Belt <br /> Complex in Durham, NC (formerly located in the Research Triangle Park)offers a self-paced, <br /> individualized, open entry/exit tmining program. This program integrates basic skills instruction <br /> and short-tern vocational taring_ The training programs offered at CET include Automated <br /> Office Skills, Medical Insurance and Billing, Electronic Assembly, and Medical Records. <br /> Orange County entered into a contractual agreement with the Center for Employment Training <br /> effective October 1997. Prior to that done, the NC Division of Social Services maintained me <br /> contractual agreement with CET. The NC Division of Social Services allocated funds directly to <br /> counties to cover the cost of tuition beginning Fiscal Year 1997-1998. Currently, funds for the <br /> mat of tuition assistance are a part of the TANF Black Grant. <br /> In addition to t raining, CET offers job development and placement for students. During Fiscal <br /> Year 2001-2002, seven students completed the CET program and are earring an average <br /> salary of$9.47 per hour. Training services offered by GET do not conflict with or duplicate <br /> services offered at the Skills OevebpmentlJoblink Center. <br /> The Social Services Board has reviewed this contract and recommends approving $40,000 for <br /> Fiscal Year 20022003. This amount will cover the cost of tuition and job placement for eight to <br /> ten Work First participants. <br /> FINANCIAL IMPACT: These casts will be paid from the required! Maintenance of Effort funds in <br /> the County WOW First Block Grant. <br />
