Primary jail health <br /> services are provided by an on-site family nurse prect8ioner employed full-time by the health <br /> Department for the jail health program. In order to cover the needs of inmates after hours when <br /> the nurse practitioner was not available,Me Department had received approval to hire a pan- <br /> time registered nurse to cover evenings and weekends, After four attempts to mount apan- <br /> time nurse,Me health department bought an alternative strategy to cover evenings and <br /> weekends. An agreement was developed with Me UNC Family Practice faculty for evening and <br /> weekend consultation on medical needs of incoming or established inmates. The on-call faculty <br /> provide medical and pharmaceutical consultation and guidance to jail staff between Me hours of <br /> 4:30 pm and 7:30 am. Monday through Firms, weekends, and holidays. The annual cost for <br /> this agreement is$6.000. The beat of the part-time nurse was estimated to be$29,000. <br /> Therefore,the cost savings in using this alternative is substantial. <br /> FINANCIAL IMPACT: The$,000 in this agreement is considerably less than the$29,000 <br /> estimate for this service in the 2001-2002 budget. The$6,000 is included in the Sheriffs <br /> budget for jail health services and will be utilized he pay this agreement. <br /> RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that Me Board approve the agreement <br /> and authorze the Chair to sign, pending Me approval of the 2002-2003 budget. <br />
