8/06/2020 <br /> <br />04 01 20 MASONRY REPAIR Page 6 of 9 <br />PART 3 - EXECUTION <br />3.1 INSPECTION, PROTECTION, AND MASONRY CLEANING <br />A. If cleaning is recommended by the manufacturer, perform a test of the cleaning product and <br />process to ensure that existing materials will not be damaged and results are as anticipated. <br />Carefully follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Let the area dry 3 to 7 days before <br />inspection/approval. <br />A. Prevent masonry mortar from staining face of surrounding masonry and other surfaces. <br />1. Cover sills, ledges, and other projecting items to protect them from mortar droppings. <br />2. Keep wall area wet below rebuilding and repair work to discourage mortar from <br />adhering. <br />3. Immediately remove mortar splatters in contact with exposed masonry and other surfaces. <br />3.2 MASONRY REPAIR, GENERAL <br />A. Workmanship is of particular importance during masonry repair on existing buildings. Maintain <br />consistent coursing, mortar joint sizes and profiles that match the existing masonry remaining in <br />place. <br />B. Appearance Standard: Repaired and tuckpointed surfaces are to have a uniform appearance as <br />viewed from 20 feet away, at grade, by the Owner and Designer. <br />C. Follow requirements of applicable industry standards/groups (Ex. BIA, National Park Service, <br />etc.), material manufacturers, and project design for general installation, installation during hot <br />and cold weather conditions, and protection of installation products and systems during curing. <br />3.3 BRICK REMOVAL AND REPLACEMENT <br />A. At locations indicated, remove bricks that are damaged/cracked, spalled, or deteriorated to <br />allow for replacement. Carefully remove entire units from joint to joint, without damaging <br />surrounding masonry, in a manner that permits replacement with full-size units. This section <br />also applies to installation of new brick where existing brick is missing. <br />1. When removing single damaged bricks, remove material from center of brick and work <br />toward outside edges. <br />B. Support and protect remaining masonry that surrounds removal area. <br />C. Maintain flashing, reinforcement, lintels, and adjoining construction in an undamaged condition <br />D. Notify the Designer of unforeseen detrimental conditions including voids, cracks, bulges, and <br />loose units in existing masonry backup, rotted wood, rusted metal, and other deteriorated items. <br />E.
