9/2/2020 <br /> <br />32 93 00 PLANTS Page 16 of 17 <br />3.9 EDGING INSTALLATION <br />A. Steel Edging: Install steel edging where indicated according to manufacturer's written <br />instructions. Anchor with steel stakes spaced approximately 30 inches apart, driven below top <br />elevation of edging. <br />B. Shovel-Cut Edging: Separate mulched area from turf areas with a 45-degree, 4-to 6-inch deep, <br />shovel-cut edge as shown on Drawings. <br />3.10 PLANTING AREA MULCHING <br />A. Layout mulch beds carefully with smooth lines and as indicated on the drawings. Mulch <br />backfilled surfaces of planting areas and other areas indicated. <br />B. Organic Mulch in Planting Areas: Apply over whole surface of mass planting areas or on isolated <br />plantings as follows: <br />1. 3” minimum depth for trees, shrubs and groundcovers <br />2. 1 ½” minimum depth for groundcovers, perennials, and annual beds. <br />C. Do not place mulch within 3 inches of tree or large shrub trunks. <br />3.11 PLANT MAINTENANCE <br />A. Until final acceptance maintain plantings by pruning, cultivating, watering, weeding, fertilizing, <br />mulching, restoring planting saucers, adjusting and repairing tree-stabilization devices, resetting <br />to proper grades or vertical position, and performing other operations as required to establish <br />healthy, viable plantings. Spray or treat as required to keep trees and shrubs free of weeds, insects <br />and disease. <br />B. Until final acceptance fill in as necessary soil subsidence that may occur because of settling or <br />other processes. Replace mulch materials damaged or lost in areas of subsidence. <br />C. Include the following required action at 12 months from Substantial Completion: <br />1. Remove tree staking systems, above and below grade. <br />2. Remove tree saucers. <br />3. Expose root crowns of all trees planted on the job. <br />3.12 CLEANUP AND PROTECTION <br />A. During planting, keep adjacent paving and construction clean and work area in an orderly <br />condition. <br />B. Protect plants from damage due to landscape operations and operations of other contractors and <br />trades. Maintain protection during installation and maintenance periods.
