87 <br /> lib <br /> 1.6.1 Built Environment <br /> The built environment in the study area is primarily rural residential,with agricultural farms scattered in between <br /> (Figure 28).There are commercial,retail, and industrial developments at the eastern and western ends of the study area <br /> and many natural areas on the east end of the corridor.Overall, the study area is low density. <br /> A review of places of worship in the vicinity of the study area identified 27 places of worship and seven cemeteries.Five <br /> public schools and one private school are located within the project study area,with most of the schools being located <br /> within either Mebane or Hillsborough municipal limits.In addition,there are seven fire stations that are spread across the <br /> corridor(including Mebane,Efland,and Orange County Fire Departments as well as Eno Fire and Rescue).The full list of <br /> community resources is included as an Appendix item. <br /> Other notable places of interest include the three National Register-listed historic districts(Mebane Commercial,Old <br /> South Mebane,and Hillsborough Historic)and 14 National-Register-listed historic sites located within those districts. <br /> Lastly,the corridor is sprinkled with numerous open spaces,parks, and natural areas,most notably,the Mebane <br /> Community Park,Occoneechee Natural Area and Speedway,Eno River State Park and Rock Quarry, and the Duke <br /> Forest. <br /> 1.6.2 Land Use <br /> Historic Properties <br /> The North Carolina State Historic Properties Office(SHPO)is responsible for surveying and designating structures and <br /> districts of historical significance and maintains an online web viewer with more information <br /> http:Hgis.ncdcr.gov/hpoweb . <br /> The highest level of preservation is the National Register.The second highest is the State Study List.The third level is <br /> Determined Eligible,meaning that the properties are in the process of becoming listed on the Study List.The following <br /> historic properties were identified within the project study area,shown in Table 22: <br /> 85 US 70 Multimodal Corridor Study Existing Conditions Report <br />
