Title of Grant <br />Request <br />Mix(ed)tape Podcast – W ere You Listening? <br />Grant Amount <br />Requested <br />2,000 <br />Project Start Date <br />(no earlier than July <br />1, 2023) <br />July 1, 2023 <br />Project End Date (no <br />later than June 30, <br />2024) <br />June 30, 2024 <br />Project/Program <br />Summary <br />Amid growing concerns of racial injustice across the United States in 2020, <br />Melissa Villodas and Andrés Hincapié sought opportunities to highlight the <br />experiences of Black people within the context of the Afro-Latin Dance <br />Scene in the Triangle, a thriving community of locals. Although the intensity <br />of work around anti-racism efforts may ebb and flow with media coverage <br />of distressing news, Melissa and Andrés have demonstrated their <br />consistency and commitment to this effort by developing content that can <br />help enthusiasts move toward a more anti-racist orientation to art and <br />culture. In addition to the focus on the contribution of Black people and <br />culture across the Latin American diaspora through dance and music, our <br />project also highlights matters of intersectional identity (the intersection of <br />race, class, gender, and sexual orientation) across rhythms, dance, music, <br />and culture. As such, the project highlights marginalized groups whose <br />stories need to be shared. Finally, the dissemination of our podcast <br />addresses a great need. Information is provided without cost to the <br />consumer. Many times, what is learned about rhythms, music, dance, and <br />culture are reserved for people who can afford to take classes and travel. <br />Our project makes knowledge about the African and Latin American <br />Diaspora, from the voices of experts and those who live the art, readily <br />accessible to all who desire to learn. <br />The relevance of our work was recognized in 2020 by The State Of Things <br />– W UNC, who ran a segment on our work which included an interview with <br />both Andrés and Melissa, and by UNC Endeavors who created a visual <br />summary of our work including a short interview. <br />Given the relevance of our content for the Latino community in the U.S. <br />and for the Latin-American community at large, we are proposing to make <br />our W ere You Listening? (W YL) series more accessible by revamping the <br />first fifteen episodes and translating them to Spanish. To date, we have <br />developed 24 episodes of the series but only the last 9 of these have been <br />produced in both languages, English and Spanish. As part of the revamp <br />and translation of these episodes, we want to continue offering written <br />versions of these episodes through the North Carolina based magazine <br />Revista Latina, a magazine that tackles issues of relevance for the local <br />Latino community.
