Artist Description W e worked with the Durham Arts Council Creative Arts in Public School
<br />(CAPS) program to secure our artists this year, and are delighted to work
<br />with them again for this next academic year. W e chose a diverse mix of
<br />performances including storytelling, music, and theater, and focusing on
<br />themes including women’s stories, environmental issues, and African and
<br />Latin culture. Performance descriptions for the 2023-24 school year are as
<br />follows (total cost $5,975):
<br />The Beast: Sankofa- History of African-American Music from Spirituals to
<br />Hip Hop (2 shows, K-2 and 3-5, for $1,500)
<br />Straight outta Durham, the cultural and entrepreneurial nexus of a new
<br />South, The Beast is a home-grown artistic force, mixing tap-dancers,
<br />puppeteers, and spoken word artists into its repertoire. In this educational
<br />show, The Beast will weave the story of African-American music into an
<br />interactive performance. This will perform original songs, as well as
<br />standards from the spiritual, jazz and Hip-Hop canon. Students will
<br />participate by engaging in call-and-response, improvisation and more.
<br />Curious Theatre Collective: Sally’s Ride- To Space and Beyond! (2 shows,
<br />K-2 and 3-5, for $1,875)
<br />Curious Theatre Collective tells the stories of remarkable women through
<br />original theater programming, inspiring young audiences to follow their
<br />curiosity, persevere through challenges, and believe in the power of their
<br />imagination. Sally Ride will take audiences on the rid of their lives in this
<br />dynamic performance about space exploration! Through music, audience
<br />participation, and narrative, this performance will ignite excitement for
<br />science, while having loads of fun. Students will learn that by venturing into
<br />space, we improve life on earth by advances in environmental
<br />sustainability, medicine, and technology.
<br />StArt of Cool: The Brevan Hampden Group (2 shows, K-2 and 3-5, for
<br />$1,600)
<br />StArt of Cool is a music program that provides education for students
<br />interested in learning more about the performance and fundamentals of
<br />various styles of music. The Brevan Hampden Group is a multinational
<br />Latin ensemble, founded by their leader, percussionist Brevan Hampden in
<br />2012. Members of the band come from many walks of life and areas of the
<br />world, including Puerto Rico, Nicaragua, Venezuela, the United States of
<br />America, and more. Look for sounds including Salsa, Merengue, Cumbia,
<br />Rumba, Bomba, Plena, and Bolero.
<br />Vault Theatre: The Girl W ho Swallowed a Cactus, by Eric Coble (2 shows,
<br />K-2 and 3-5, for $1,000)
<br />Vault Theatre is dedicated to unlocking the imagination through
<br />comprehensive and innovative programming. In this production, school is
<br />out for the summer, the weather is hot and the boredom is heavy, but 8-
<br />year-old Sheila and her pack of pals aren’t going to let the summer heat
<br />wear them down. It’s a whirlwind adventure about how we affect the
<br />environment and the animals with whom we share the planet, and how we
<br />take on the mission of saving the world from ourselves. A unique twist on
<br />traditional storytelling, this original play shows the power of memory and
<br />imagination.
