Community Impact W hile Art Hives by their very nature are intended to connect all members of
a community, this proposed Art Hive is designed to connect with some of
the most under-resourced and marginalized members of our community:
those experiencing homelessness and poverty. All people are creative by
nature and each person’s art takes shape in its own way through dance,
music, poetry, crafts, painting, pottery and more. Community members who
are marginalized may have fewer opportunities to engage in community art
making but their innate need to create and engage in community is always
there.
By creating a pop-up Art Hive at the IFC of Carrboro, we will be creating a
welcoming space for a wide range of community members including
children, seniors, people living with mental illness and those experiencing
poverty and homelessness. Getting to know our neighbors fosters respect
and encourages people to care for the members and places in the
community. Creating art together produces tangible representations of what
community means and the role each member has their community.
I anticipate 12-15 people participating in each monthly Art Hive. My hope is
that as people learn about the Art Hive, the number of participants each
month will increase.
Artist Experience As an artist and art therapist, I have worked to create community in a
variety of ways. I have organized community art shows, participated in
community theater and facilitated countless art therapy groups. As a
previous retail business owner, I understand the important role engaging
the community plays in supporting businesses. Some of the ways I did this
in my business were through community art shows and fundraisers for
nonprofits.
I have experience working with a wide variety of people. I have worked
with children with differing developmental and intellectual abilities, physical
illness and mental illness; Seniors with and without dementia; Refugees
and immigrants of all ages; And adults with a variety of challenges including
severe and persistent mental illness and differing developmental and
intellectual abilities.
I am comfortable working with a wide range of art media and am proficient
in teaching basic art skills to a variety of people.
W hile I have not created an Art Hive yet, I plan to visit Montreal this July
where there are several Art Hives. I plan to not only visit the Art Hives but
also spend time talking to some of the individuals who developed the Art
Hives and work there as well.
How do you plan to
market your project?
I plan to market this project through social media and through my varied
community connections especially with nonprofits serving marginalized
community members. The IFC has offered to promote the Art Hive to the
people they serve as well as their volunteers and staff.
DocuSign Envelope ID: 690D1B77-F56D-4419-B19D-FBD2E1CFD4C1
