1 <br /> ORANGE COUNTY <br /> BOARD OF COMMISSIONERS <br /> ACTION AGENDA ITEM ABSTRACT <br /> Meeting Date: June 4, 2002 <br /> Action Agenda <br /> Item No. <br /> SUBJECT: Pyrotechnics Permit - Orange Speedway <br /> DEPARTMENT: Purchasing & Fire Marshal PUBLIC HEARING: (Y/N) No <br /> ATTACHMENT(S): INFORMATION CONTACT: <br /> Checklist Pam Jones, 245-2652 <br /> Permit Mike Tapp, 968-2050 <br /> TELEPHONE NUMBERS: <br /> Hillsborough 732-8181 <br /> Chapel Hill 968-4501 <br /> Durham 688-7331 <br /> Mebane 336-227-2031 <br /> PURPOSE: To consider approving a pyrotechnics permit for Orange County Speedway on June 29, <br /> 2002. <br /> BACKGROUND: Orange County Speedway has requested that the County Commissioners approve <br /> a pyrotechnics permit for the fireworks display which is scheduled for June 29, 2002 in conjunction <br /> with the regularly scheduled race. <br /> GS 14-414 indicates that the Board shall consider a fireworks permit for"any and all kinds of <br /> fireworks and explosives, which are used for exhibitions or amusement purposes." <br /> GS 14-413 empowers the Commissioner to authorize and issue permits for the use of pyrotechnics in <br /> connection with "...shows of all descriptions...but only after satisfactory evidence is produced to the <br /> effect that said pyrotechnics will be used for the aforementioned purposes and none other." <br /> County policy further requires assurance from the sponsoring agency that adequate public safety <br /> measures will be exercised; and that the County will be protected as an additional insured on the <br /> insurance policy(ies) covering the event. The documents attached indicate satisfactory evidence that <br /> these requirements have been met. <br /> FINANCIAL IMPACT: There is no financial impact as a result of this action. <br /> RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board approve a pyrotechnics permit <br /> for the Orange County Speedway for June 29, 2002, or rain date as may be set; and authorize the staff <br /> to execute permits as needed. <br />
