Additionally they will learn how art plays a major role in the Native <br />American lifestyle; how American Indians make pottery; how they tell their stories through the clay; <br />and how pottery has been used in the past and how it's used today. Pre- and post-visit activities <br />will include the use of books highlighting different social emotional skills. Books include Many <br />Shapes of Clay by Kenesha Sneed, Dave the Potter by Laban Carrick Hill, and Josefina by <br />Jeanette W inter. <br />Project Start Date (no <br />earlier than July 1, 2023) <br />January 1, 2024 <br />Project End Date (no <br />later than June 30, 2024) <br />May 1, 2024 <br />Project Goals This project meets the district goal of instructional excellence. This artist visit provides an <br />experience for fourth grade students that fits with the district's core value of engagement. This <br />project aligns with the goal: Goal 1 (G1): CHCCS students will be provided access to a challenging, <br />diverse and culturally relevant, standards-aligned curriculum which is student-centered and will <br />propel their educational growth and achievement. Specifically, students will learn from a North <br />Carolina Native American potter. The students will have the opportunity to learn about American <br />Indian history and art. Ms. Lynch will lead a discussion with students about what they have learned <br />about American Indians in North Carolina. She will bring in a collection of her pottery for the <br />students to see. The students will learn how art plays a major role in the Native American lifestyle. <br />The students will learn how American Indians make pottery and how they tell their stories through <br />the clay. They will learn how pottery has been used in the past and how it's used today. They will <br />learn about natural resources used to make pottery and the different methods used such as hand <br />coiling, pinch pots, hand building. The students will learn about the natural tools used to create <br />textures on the pots.
