Then, in art class, students
will develop 3-D projects related to the rainforest out of a variety of materials (especially found
objects and Papier Mâché). Some of the projects will be individual student creations and some
will be constructed by groups. Students will also create informative signs from their research that
provide information about the flora and fauna of rainforests, the ecological issues regarding why
rainforests are important, and the current issues affecting rainforests. Finally, as a whole school,
students and teachers will install an immersive rainforest that will take into account all the five
senses. Once the display is up, all CES the students and the local community will be invited to
travel through and learn about the rainforest.
Project Start Date (no
earlier than July 1, 2023)
11/2023
Project End Date (no
later than June 30,
2024)
5/31/2024
Project Goals Students at all grade levels read age-appropriate books about rainforests and, from their
research, produce educational signage for the immersive rainforest that will be created;
Students at all grade levels work individually and/or in groups to create 3-D elements of a
rainforest;
Erect an “immersive” rainforest that students, staff, and community members can visit and walk
through, one where all the senses will be stimulated;
Students work together in a positive and impactful way to create a beautiful and impactful art
display.
Students learn about an important ecological environment and the effects that humans are having
on that environment.
Curricular Goals:
The Remarkable Rainforests project will give students an opportunity to learn across multiple
disciplines–literacy, science (animals, plants, ecology, the five senses), art, etc. This is direct
alignment with NC Arts Standards. Social Emotional Learning–Students will learn to work together
in a positive and impactful way. They will directly see how we are all connected together and
must work together in our own classrooms and larger communities.
Audience Description CES students and staff will be audience members during the school day; community members will
also visit the rainforest. The demographics for the CES student body is as follows: W hite-54%;
Latinx-31%; Multiracial-6%; Asian-4%; Black-4%; Native American-1%. W e expect families and
community members of all ages and ethnicities to make up the rainforest viewers from outside of
the school community.
Location Description Carrboro Elementary School has its own stage and auditorium where the rainforest will be
erected (backstage). The area around the school is a very walkable community and there is
ample parking at the school for folks who plan to visit the rainforest.
Artist Description In this case, the artists will be the approximately 500 students at Carrboro Elementary (grades K-
5). Students will be led by the art teacher at CES, Ms. Deb Cox. Deb Cox has a BFA in K-12
Visual Arts elementary from Syracuse University. She has taught Art for over 24 years in the NC
public schools. Her resume is included.
Are you hiring
multicultural artists with
the requested funds from
this grant?
No
How will the
project/program be
publicized and promoted
to reach intended
participants?
The Carrboro Elementary School community is experienced in getting the word out immersive art
exhibits. All students will be aware of it as they will work on the 3-D items and signage that will be
part of the rainforest they build. Staff and parents will certainly hear about the rainforest from the
students! In addition, there will be flyers hung throughout the school. Newsletters to parents
(teacher, PTA, principal) will all have information about the rainforest.
DocuSign Envelope ID: DA65D1B8-BCE6-4F19-869D-DAFD53245C0A
