Proclamation <br />11, "Official for a Day" Agenda <br />INFORMATION CONTACT: <br />Sharron Hinton, ext. 2300 <br />TELEPHONE NUMBERS: <br />Hillsborough 732-8181 <br />Chapel Hill 968-4501 <br />Durham 688-7331 <br />Mebane 336-227-2031 <br />PURPOSE: To proclaim the week of April 18 through 24, 2004 as Orange County Government <br />Week and endorse the "Official for a Day" activities. <br />BACKGROUND: The National Association of Counties and the North Carolina Association of <br />County Commissioners encourage local governments to celebrate County Government Week in <br />an effort to educate citizens about county government. A proclamation to acknowledge the <br />week of April 18 through 24, 2004 as Orange County Government Week is provided as <br />Attachment I. <br />This year marks the fourteenth year that Orange County has celebrated County Government <br />Week by sponsoring the "Official for a Day" Program. On this day, Wednesday, April 21St <br />students from the area high schools are partnered with department heads and management <br />staff during the morning to gain an understanding of county government operations. After the <br />mentoring, a mock board of county commissioners' meeting is held whereupon students <br />address issues often presented to the Board. An agenda for the day is provided as Attachment <br />FINANCIAL IMPACT: None <br />RECOMMENDATION(S): The Manager recommends that the Board adopts the proclamation <br />and endorses the planned event.
