2
3. Announcements, Petitions and Comments by Board Members
Commissioner Fowler had no comments.
Commissioner Greene had no comments.
Commissioner Hamilton said she gave remarks at the opening of the Waterstone Fire and
EMS Station. She said the facility was designed with the input of public safety and is a testament
to the cooperation between Orange County, Orange Rural Fire Department, the Town of
Hillsborough, and all volunteers and first responders. She said she went to the Hargraves
Community Center on May 20t" for the Be Well Resource Fair and Family Fun event. She said
there was a lot of information on mental health resources in the community. She said one item
that caught her attention was discussion about a psycho-active substance called Delta 8. She
said products containing the substance have similar packaging to candy products that children
might buy. She said Delta 8 is legal because it is synthesized from hemp. She said it is important
for the community to recognize that companies are using packaging to lure children into thinking
something is candy. She said it has been brought up at the Health Department, but seeing the
packaging made her realize the extent of the problem.
Chair Bedford said the Board of Health was re-accredited. She said that the Board will
hold their last budget work session on June 8'. She said if anyone had comments, to please get
them to the Board. She said the Board typically does not make any changes to the budget
between the last budget work session and the date of adoption.
Vice-Chair McKee expressed appreciation to everyone in attendance at the meeting.
Commissioner Portie-Ascott also thanked everyone in attendance at the meeting. She
said she completed the ethics requirement for local elected government officials. She said she
attended the Juvenile Crime Prevention Council meeting. She said they wanted to increase the
diversity of the committee and to hear from all members of the community. She said they are
looking for people under 21 years of age and in particular people from the Latino and Asian-Pacific
Islander communities. She said they are also looking for people from the Parks and Recreation
and business communities.
Commissioner Richards had no comments.
As amended earlier in the meeting, Commissioner Fowler made a motion to approve Item
8 — Consent Agenda, with the addition of item 8-s.
