Earlier in my career I practiced dentistry <br /> in neighborhood health centers in Boston. I am the Rozier Douglass Distinguished Professor of <br /> Dental Public Health at the UNC Adams School of Dentistry and Gillings School of Global Public <br /> Health. I am a former dean (2011-2016) of the UNC Adams School of Dentistry. <br /> Please explain your reasons for wanting to serve on this board <br /> I have served in leadership positions in national dental organizations and feel it is time to give <br /> back to my community to improve the public s health and oral health. I have talked to other <br /> dentists who have served on this and other NC County Boards of Health and they all say it is a <br /> very worthwhile experience. <br /> How would your particpation on this board contribute to the diversity of viewpoints? <br /> Oral health is an often overlooked part of the body. However, research continues to show the <br /> strong connections between oral health and other systemic conditions. My research over the <br /> years has focused on disease prevention and oral health disparities, initially in children and more <br /> recently in older adults (e.g., relationship between tooth loss and cognitive decline, loneliness <br />
