4 <br /> A motion was made by Commissioner Fowler, seconded by Vice-Chair McKee, to approve <br /> and authorize the Chair to sign the proclamation recognizing the success and accomplishments <br /> of Orange County high schools' robotics teams. <br /> VOTE: UNANIMOUS <br /> Each team demonstrated their robot's skills and discussed the design and competition <br /> process. They also explained how their teams perform community outreach and improve STEM <br /> knowledge for all Orange County residents. Each team was presented with a signed copy of the <br /> proclamation. <br /> Chair Bedford expressed appreciation for the educators, staff, and businesses that <br /> supported the robotics teams. She said hearing about their impacts in the community and <br /> outreach to younger students was moving. She congratulated the teams for their success. <br /> Commissioner Fowler said that the students' accomplishments were quite impressive. <br /> She said she appreciated the collaboration between the teams. She said as a parent of a child <br /> with special needs, she also appreciated that the teams used their skills and abilities to improve <br /> the lives of people in the community. <br /> Vice-Chair McKee said he had previously spent time with the Hedgehogs robotics team <br /> and was very impressed. He said that in a competition the robots do not move slowly as they did <br /> during the meeting but are very fast as they complete challenges. He said the most impressive <br /> thing to him was that the materials to make the robots are not bought off-the-shelf but are <br /> customized for each robot. <br /> Commissioner Richards congratulated the teams, their families, mentors, and teachers. <br /> She said she was most impressed by the collaboration, even though it is a competitive sport. <br /> b. Resolution Honoring Chief Deputy Jamison R. Sykes for 28 Years of Law Enforcement <br /> Service and Awarding Him his Badge and Sidearm <br /> The Board adopted a resolution honoring Chief Deputy Jamison R. Sykes for 28 years of law <br /> enforcement service and awarding him his badge and sidearm and authorized the Chair to sign <br /> the Resolution. <br /> BACKGROUND: Chief Deputy Jamison R. Sykes joined the Orange County Sheriff's Office as <br /> a detention officer on August 25, 1995 and held the ranks of Deputy, Corporal, Sergeant, and <br /> Chief Deputy, serving in the Patrol, Civil, Courthouse Security, and Narcotics Divisions. <br /> North Carolina General Statute § 20-187.2 allows retiring officers to receive the badge they wore <br /> during their service with the law enforcement agency. Further, the statute provides that the <br /> Orange County Board of Commissioners may, in its discretion, award to a retiring officer his or <br /> her service sidearm at a price determined by the Board. It is customary to bestow upon retiring <br /> officers their badge and sidearm in recognition and appreciation of their dedication and service. <br /> In recognition of his distinguished service, Orange County Sheriff Charles Blackwood would like <br /> to award Chief Deputy Sykes his badge and sidearm. <br /> Vice-Chair McKee read the following resolution: <br />
