Announcements, Petitions and Comments by Board Members <br /> Commissioner Fowler had no comments. <br /> Commissioner Hamilton welcomed everyone in attendance at the meeting. She said she <br /> attended the Alliance Health board meeting. She said the next meeting will be on June 1 St, during <br /> which they will discuss the organization's budget. She said the Schools Safety Task Force will <br /> meet on May 2511 and assess what they have learned so far and discuss next steps. She said on <br /> May 20th, Alliance Health along with Orange County Social Services and Public Health, will host <br /> a Bee Well Resource and Family Fun event at Hargraves Center in Chapel Hill to share <br /> information about physical and mental health issues. <br /> Commissioner Portie-Ascott said it was nice to have so many people in attendance at the <br /> meeting. She said it was her 90th day on the Board. She said since the last meeting, she had <br /> met with the Arts Commission and had taken a tour of two Chapel Hill Carrboro City Schools <br /> facilities. She said while visiting Culbreth Middle School, she was greeted with a performance by <br /> a chorus class. She said she also visited Carrboro- Elementary School. She said she also <br /> attended the Juvenile Crime Prevention Council meeting. She said the Department of Justice will <br /> promote a campaign called NC SAFE the week of June 4-10. She said SAFE stands for"Securing <br /> All Firearms Effectively." She said firearms are the leading cause of death for children in North <br /> Carolina. <br /> Commissioner Richards arrived at 7:07 p.m. <br /> Chair Bedford said she attended a DSS Board meeting where they heard an updated on <br /> childcare subsidies. She said that the next budget public hearing will be held on June 1st. She <br /> said she was going to volunteer at the Bee Well event, assisting in the Healthy Carolinians survey. <br /> Vice-Chair McKee had no comments. <br /> Commissioner Greene had no comments. <br /> Commissioner Richards said she was just arriving from the Burlington Graham MPO <br /> meeting. She said she attended an orientation with the Orange County Partnership for Young <br /> Children. She said there is a sub-team working on filling open childcare seats and that team is <br /> collaborating with county staff. She said she hopes the team will find an effective strategy so that <br /> seats will not go unused. <br /> 4. Proclamations/ Resolutions/Special Presentations <br /> a. Proclamation Recognizinq the Success and Accomplishments of Orange County High <br /> School Robotics Teams <br /> The Board approved a proclamation recognizing five Orange County high schools for their robotics <br /> teams' recent success and accomplishments. <br /> BACKGROUND: Four robotics teams representing five high schools in Orange County have <br /> had recent successes at state and international robotics competitions. Team 587, The <br /> Hedgehogs, won the First Robotics Competition North Carolina District State Championship, <br /> and the team was subsequently invited to compete in the international First Robotics <br /> Championship. Team 4795, Eastbots, achieved the top ranking in the North Carolina district <br /> and was also invited to the international First Robotics Championship. The Hedgehogs and <br /> Eastbots both reached the playoffs at their divisions in the First Robotics Championship. Team <br /> 4829, Titanium Tigers, won the Johnston County District event and later competed at the North <br /> Carolina District State Championship. Team 7763, Carrborobotics, won the UNC Pembroke <br />
