(250
words or less)
The Orange County Historical Museum: Education Through Exhibits aligns with the
Orange County BOCC goal “Ensure a high quality of life and lifelong learning that
champions diversity, education at all levels, libraries, parks, recreation, and animal
welfare.” The Museum will design and present free exhibits to engage and educate the
public about the dynamic history of Orange County. Programs, events, tours, and a variety
of educational offerings will provide further learning opportunities for the public, through
which the museum will strive to promote diversity and life-long learning. Museum staff
works with various members of the community and community groups to determine what
content should be presented and how in order to promote shared authority in the museum.
A variety of programs are held that appeal to different audiences, in the hopes that the
Museum can reach as many members of the community as possible. The Museum will also
facilitate educational outreach in the county by working with Orange County Schools and
other school systems, including home school groups to plan field trips and site visits.
Museum staff have met with the superintendant of Orange County Schools and the
chairman of the School Board to discuss how the Museum can partner with schools. A
follow-up meeting has been scheduled. Moreover, the museum would like to contract
individuals to facilitate educational programs for children. For example, we would like to
contract with Haliwa Saponi artist Senora Lynch who works with children pre-K-12 to make
pottery and murals.
11.
